Standard Operating Procedure

Basic Setup and Operation – HP Latex 3000 Series Printers (Roll Media Only)

1. Purpose

To define the standard process for setting up, operating, and maintaining HP Latex 3000 Series printers using roll media, ensuring consistent print quality and equipment longevity.

2. Scope

This SOP applies to all operators in the Digital Department responsible for running HP Latex 3000 Series printers.

3. Responsibilities

  • Operators: Execute daily operations, inspections, and maintenance as outlined.
  • Supervisors: Ensure SOP compliance and provide training when needed.

4. Safety Precautions

  1. Wear gloves when handling media and safety shoes in the print area.
  2. Ensure proper ventilation.
  3. Never bypass safety interlocks or open covers during printing.

5. Equipment & Materials

  • HP Latex 3000 Series Printer
  • Roll media only (approved substrates)
  • HP Latex inks and maintenance supplies
  • Caldera RIP software
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Approved cleaning solution: Alcohol + Distilled Water mixture

6. Procedure

6.1 Power & Reboot Policy

  1. Leave printer ON overnight for daily operations.
  2. Perform a full reboot every Monday morning.
  3. Reboot additionally as needed for troubleshooting or performance issues.

6.2 Media Loading (Rolls Only)

  1. From the front panel, select Load Media.
  2. Load the roll on the spindle with the print side facing out.
  3. Feed the media until sensors detect it.
  4. Follow on-screen prompts for alignment and advance.
  5. Confirm media type or create a new substrate profile if required.

6.3 Printhead & Ink Check

  1. Verify ink levels on the front panel.
  2. Check printhead status:
    • If diagnostics indicate cleaning, perform Clean or Hard Clean.
    • After cleaning, print a Printhead Status Plot.
    • If printhead does not recover, replace the defective printhead.

6.4 Color Management

Perform color correction and calibration if necessary before starting any job.

6.5 Job Setup (Caldera RIP)

  1. Send the job from Caldera RIP with correct:
    • Media profile
    • Print mode (resolution, pass count)
    • Color management settings
  2. Confirm job settings on the printer’s front panel.

6.6 Printing

  1. Press Start on the front panel.
  2. Print a First Piece Inspection:
    • Check size, color, artwork, and quantity.
    • Adjust settings if needed.
  3. Once approved, continue full production.

6.7 Unloading & Finishing

  1. After printing, select Unload Media on the front panel.
  2. Cut the media using the built-in cutter or manually.
  3. Store printed material properly and label it with:
    • Part number
    • Quantity left over on the roll (in yards)
    • Date when it was marked

6.8 Reporting in EIP Software

  1. Log into the EIP system.
  2. Report the following accurately:
    • Usage in yards
    • Number of pieces produced
  3. Ensure the operation is closed properly after reporting.

7. Shutdown & Reboot

  1. Do not power off daily; leave printer ON overnight.
  2. Perform full reboot every Monday morning and as needed for troubleshooting.

8. Maintenance

  1. Perform weekly maintenance every Monday, including:
    • Cleaning platen and surrounding area using lint-free cloth with alcohol + distilled water solution.
    • Checking and logging printhead status.
    • Verifying media feed and alignment systems.
  2. Follow the weekly maintenance procedure embedded in the printer system step-by-step.
  3. Also follow any periodical maintenance instructions that appear on the printer system interface.
  4. Record all maintenance activities in the department log.

9. Troubleshooting

  1. Refer to HP Latex 3000 Series User Guide for error codes and solutions.
  2. Contact HP Support if issues persist or cannot be resolved internally.
